What Do You Know About Gun Safes?

GUNSAFE

I am in the market for a gun safe. Up to 10 long guns with side shelves. That would give me room to grow :)  I have read reviews but would rather hear it from the folks I trust – meaning YOU.  Do you have a favorite?  And if so, why?  What do you think is the most important feature?

I really like this rack.

Also, I need a small bedside safe for a handgun. But it cannot attach to my nightstand so that may present a problem. Any ideas?

Now, I know you’re wondering how much money I want to invest in this.  All total I want to spend $1200 or less. I realize that is not a lot of money for what I want, but that is a lot of money for me.  I just want something to secure my firearms and keep them dry.

So, what do you think?

Blessings,

Red

  1. This video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltK-bDbADa8) is an interview of a safe dealer talking about safe construction. He's a Fort Knox dealer and really pushes them, but it gives you some good information on what to look for in a safe.

  2. My hubs and I have a fingerprint safe by the bed. it fits several handguns (ahem) and only opens to my fingerprint or hubby's. We got it of Amazon for a bit over $100.00. We are actually looking for a long gun safe, since our cabinet is a wee bit overcrowded. Let us know what you decide on!

    1. Howdy! So glad to hear from you. My sister has a safe like yours but it was spendy - like 300 to 400. Maybe not the same thing? Anyway, I will check on Amazon. Thanks for the suggestion!
I'll let you know what we end up with. The process may take awhile....

  3. Pretty Lady, there isn't a nickles worth of difference between the major name brands, only price. I do recommend you stay away from the electronic lock models. When the lock fails it's a booger to repair. I like the combination systems. Just my two cents. My handgun vault is sold under the brand, GunVault. Mine has two levels and will hold several handguns. It has four digit finger pad and you set the key code, also as a back-up may be opened with a key. Sold at either Amazon or Cheaper Than Dirt. Good luck.

  4. The only thing I have heard about long-gun safes is that their backs are the most vulnerable part. Of course this comment was from a welder by trade who was quite familiar with many ways to cut metal quickly. When you get the long-gun safe, position it against a brick or concrete wall if possible and bolt it down.

    1. Thanks Mrs S.
We think we have a good concrete spot for securing it. Thanks for the tip about the backs being vulnerable. I didn't know that!

    1. PS: Why we like Liberty, is for their outstanding warranty and service. Anything goes wrong and they come out and fix it. Our new one is the Liberty Fatboy Jr. electronic combination, and I love it. If I need to open it in a hurry, I don't have fumble with the manual combination, it makes it easier with little kids around, I can keep it locked 24/7 and just punch in our code. Go to : http://www.libertysafe.com/

and watch the videos on the testing the safes go through..One owner had one during all the CA wildfires, It was found in the debri of his house, beat up, but everything inside was still in tact. When the reps at Liberty heard about it, they wanted to see it for themselves. Awesome testimony on the durability and quality. Well worth the money.

We have a Liberty Safe outlet within an hours drive and have been talking about calling to set up an appointment. It really helps to know how highly you recommend them!

  7. When manufacturers design and test gun safes, the intended primary use is the protection of guns. These safes are designed to keep unauthorized users from accessing guns and potentially harming others. They are also designed to protect innocent children by securing dangerous firearms so that they are out of sight and out of reach. Luckily, you are never limited to the primary intended use for any item. Jasper Komar

  8. First, I would consider how fireproof the safe is. In my mind, a truly fireproof safe is the number one criteria I have. gun safe
